The Landing

It was forty years ago. I was at our then home when a dull, dark grey hot air balloon passed nearby. It was clearly in need of a landing site. Armed with my trusty Canon Demi I set out to find it.

This was before the time of sponsorship on these flying beauties and before weird and wonderful shapes were thought of.

The balloon was not much above tree height.

And it was definitely getting lower.

There’s a burst of flame from the balloon’s gas jet there as the descent is controlled.

Touchdown is imminent. Some chaps on the ground have gathered a rope to help control the landing.

These days, balloons are a fairly common site. Forty years ago that was a real treat.
