Some recent garden butterflies

I feel very lucky to live where I do. I always have a decent view over village and countryside and there is never a shortage of wildlife. Here are some recent butterflies, in the garden.

This one is sunning itself on a paving slab. It’s called a wall. Perhaps it sometimes uses vertical surfaces to soak up the sun.

Lost in the herbaceous stuff we can make out a speckled wood.

This meadow brown has chosen some lavender.

A red admiral had found a piece of rope that made sure a hedge stayed upright in gales.

A peacock on the inevitable butterfly bush was not keen to pose.

A tortoiseshell was more co-operative.

Here’s a gatekeeper

Photos of all species taken in a half hour spell on July 31st 2014 and all within a few feet of our house.Large and small whites were seen as well.
