New Abbey

If I have to go on a holiday then I am happy to chance discover lovely places. New Abbey, just south of Dumfries in Scotland is a case in point. I’d never heard of this place which we passed through on our way to an overnight stop. The next morning we stopped and took a look.

The first thing to note is that the abbey church is definitely not new, but of course it was once.image004The main road through New Abbey is lined with single storey terraced dwellings.

Enjoy the walking whilst you can. My walking is now quite curtailed by arthritis but it doesn’t stop exploration or the discovery of chance places like New Abbey which – never heard of by me or my wife – really bowled us over.

My local canal is the Kennet and Avon near Devizes so I have enjoyed seeing your walks there. In the much quieter 1970s We used to take canal holidays with friends. It’s still a great way to travel for you just can’t rush. These days the hire prices are so high. Walking is definitely the cheap option.

From recent and past holidays in Scotland I could commend a walk along the Crinan Canal. It is beautiful and different being built for sea going ships and now used largely by yachts. It wouldn’t be much more than a half day walk for fit people.

I’ll enjoy seeing other walks of yours.
