About The Happy Nerd

I’m a nerd and proud of it. Actually, I’m normal enough. I’m happily married and have been for over 40 years. I have children and, at present, three grandchildren. I just happen to like things which many people associate with nerds.

I’m an unashamed railway enthusiast. I started train spotting in the 1950s and collected not only numbers, but all sorts of cheap railwayana. I was always interested in the way railways changed the social life of people as well as in the technology.

From railways I moved on to more general industrial archaeology – canals, mills, buildings etc. I love them all.

But you can’t get away from nature. I’d never be a twitcher, but birds, not to mention butterflies, bees, and the great wealth of all plant and animal life are all fascinating.

It was in the 1950s that I started collecting gramophones and 78RPM records. I’ve recently got rid of some, but I still have 4 working gramophones (I think) and more records than I care to imagine. 1920s dance band music and jazz are my main themes but I like to be able to find a record for any occasion.

I was brought up to have knowledge of farming and have, in a small way, been involved myself. I have kept pigs, sheep and cows. I enjoy agricultural history too.

Perhaps I should stop there and say, I’m interested in most things. I’m a jack of all trades and , I’m quite sure, a master of none.

I live in the South of England and overlook chalk downland – something else I really love.
