Whatever you call them these are lovely birds. They are lovely to see still, on the ground with a chance to spot the iridescent colours. It’s one of these colours that gives them the more formal name of green plover. They are great to see in the air, flying with that languid, almost lazy wing stroke which gives them the name of lapwing. And they are lovely to hear which gives them the sobriquet of peewit.
I have looked at these birds before (click here). But the recent trip up to Cumbria enabled me to get some better photos.
There, in a not perfect photo, we can see the colours including green. But this sleeping bird allowed me to get quite close.
The peewit was once common in the south of England. It’s good to know they still do well in the north.
